The tech reset, the China risk
Technology has undergone a meaningful reset. Investors have cut exposure, positioning has normalised and stress levels remain elevated, leaving parts of the sector looking considerably cleaner than they did just a few weeks ago. But just as the tactical backdrop begins to improve, a new structural risk is emerging. China's rapidly advancing semiconductor ecosystem could become an increasingly important challenge for the AI supply chain. Here are the charts catching our attention.
Tech positioning has reset just as retail seasonality turns more supportive. Institutional positioning has normalised and retail participation has cooled materially from earlier this summer. If seasonal retail inflows begin to recover over the coming weeks, the backdrop for technology could become increasingly supportive. Importantly, the crowded Long Semis / Short Mag 7 trade has now been largely washed out, leaving positioning much cleaner.
Large cap tech exposure has been cut aggressively, bringing positioning much closer to historical norms after months of heavy AI concentration.
Aggregate equity positioning has reset to neutral as discretionary investors cut exposure to its lowest level since early April, while systematic positioning remains relatively elevated.
Nasdaq's sell-off last week appears to have triggered the first wave of CTA unwinds, writes BofA. Faster trend-following models have likely already reduced exposure, while slower models remain long. The bigger risk is that continued weakness in the Nasdaq spills over into broader equity markets, forcing systematic selling across the S&P 500, Russell 2000 and other major indices.
Tech volatility remains well bid. While the VXN/VIX ratio has retreated from recent extremes, it continues to signal elevated stress in technology stocks.
AI credit markets are showing signs of stress, but this is not 2008, writes JPM's credit team. Hyperscaler credit spreads have widened materially as investors question how much debt AI spending will ultimately require. The uncertainty around future funding needs—not current balance sheet strength— is spilling into equities and may be contributing to the recent post-earnings "sell the news" reaction. Despite this, credit markets still appear willing to absorb substantial new issuance.
