A quick caveat before we begin: this is all based on historical precedent and each year is a little bit different.

Next week, economists from around the world will gather in Jackson Hole for the Federal Reserve’s annual symposium. Outside of individual rate decisions, this conference is traditionally one of the most prominent global central banking events of the year. Given the historical lull in central bank communications in August, Jackson Hole is the highest profile opportunity to hear from policymakers ahead of the resumption of rate decisions in the Fall, with markets watching closely to gain insights on policy themes for the rest of the year. As a result, Jackson Hole—and the keynote address in particular—can generate meaningful FX volatility (Exhibit 1). In this Global Markets Daily, we address some of the most common questions around the logistics of the conference, things to watch, and some specific topics of interest this year.

Q: When will the schedule be released?

A: The full schedule will be released on Thursday, August 27, at 8pm NY time. The program will be posted here. Because the conference is in Wyoming, all times are listed in Mountain Time. That is two hours behind the US East Coast and seven hours behind London. On Thursday night, the schedule will only have the titles of papers or panel topics and speaker names—full text of the papers and speeches is typically posted to the website at the time each event is scheduled to begin.

Q: What are the main scheduled events?

A: There is a keynote speech on Friday morning, as well as two other set pieces—the luncheon address on Friday afternoon, and the closing overview panel on Saturday. The schedule changes slightly every year, but usually the panel will feature a mixture of central bankers from around the world and leaders from international organizations such as the IMF or BIS.

Q: Who do we know will be in attendance?

A: So far, we know that Fed Chairman Warsh and ECB Governing Council member Schnabel will be speaking on Friday. Rosanna Costa, President of the Central Bank of Chile, will also be participating—likely on the Saturday overview panel. RBNZ Governor Anna Breman will be in attendance though the RBNZ noted that given proximity to the RBNZ Monetary Policy Statement on September 2nd, Governor Breman will not be participating in speaking engagements. Chairman Warsh will deliver his first Jackson Hole speech as Chair on the economic outlook at 10:00am EDT on Friday, available via webcast. In the…
