Italy: Bill on revival of nuclear power in Senate

According to Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Italy could be generating nuclear electricity again by 2035, as a bill to reverse the country’s decades-long nuclear shutdown heads for a vote in the senate. The bill would establish a legal pathway for new reactors. It is expected to reach the senate on Monday, with approval expected within days, having passed the lower house in June. Source: Politico

Siemens Energy signs 2.6 GW reservation agreement in the UAE

Siemens Energy has signed a reservation agreement with EtihadWE for the supply of gas and steam turbines for the 2.6 GW Al Zawra Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power project coming up in the northern emirate of Ajman. Source: Press Release

UK launches inquiry on renewable intermittency risks

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee has launched an inquiry into the risks posed to the UK electricity system by prolonged periods of low wind and solar generation. The inquiry will examine the likelihood, severity and frequency of Dunkelflaute events lasting from days to weeks and consider potential electricity demand-supply gaps in 2030 and 2050. The work will assess current UK preparedness, future plans and gaps in policy and regulation. Source: Renews

Other news Engie and Return have expanded an existing agreement for the use of additional flexibility from battery storage facilities in Germany from 100 to 400 MW. The agreement is structured as a Virtual Flexibility Purchase Agreement and covers multiple battery storage facilities. (ESS news)

UK Offshore Wind: The UK Government has granted planning consent for a joint transmission system for both the 480 MW Morecombe wind farm and the 1.5 GW Morgan offshore wind farm, with the projects set to be connected to National Grid’s Penwortham substation by 2029. Morecombe offshore wind received a permit in December and is eligible for AR8, and Morgan offshore wind’s lease is expected to be awarded to a developer by the end of this year. (Renews)

The US has removed rules which previously limited the amount of greenhouse gases coal and gas plants could emit. By eliminating the additional costs, the industry is expected to save more than $300 bn, according to press. (Tagesschau)
