YEN INTERVENTION - BOJ HIKE AND CARRY TRADE RISK Rory Green

Japan’s Ministry of Finance is playing the “referee”. Tokyo appears to have seized the opportunity provided by Chair Warsh’s inconclusive press conference yesterday.

There is no official confirmation of intervention, but the methodology fits. Japanese markets are closed, and there has been a big spike in the futures market (both volume and price; chart below).

The macro backdrop also aligns. As we highlighted, authorities recognised that intervention with oil prices and Fed expectations elevated would have limited impact. A dovish Fed meeting is the MoF’s first clear opportunity to strike.

Previous interventions have been followed by BoJ hikes, most recently in mid-2024. A move tomorrow would still be a surprise, but the meeting is now live.

Markets rightly think the BoJ has been too slow; we reckon it is about to speed up. TS Lombard is more hawkish than consensus. We expect the BoJ to raise rates in September (previously October) and again in January. MoF moves suggest Takaichi may have finally got the message on FX and inflation. Ueda is already convinced of the economy’s resilience to higher rates and the upside risks to inflation (see here for details). Upward revisions to GDP and CPI forecasts, and BoJ dissent in favour of tightening tomorrow, will prepare the ground for September.

Until the BoJ backs up the MoF with accelerated monetary moves or very hawkish signalling, the JPY will remain under pressure, but that is no reason to pile into carry trades, as my colleague Daniel Von Ahlen warned strongly against last month.

To continue the footballing metaphor, the MoF has played the BoJ through on goal; it may still take some time for Ueda to score.
